Designing Exterior Wood To Withstand The Test Of Time

Published on January 11, 2026 at 12:55 PM

Exterior wood failure is rarely about the wood itself. It’s about decisions made early in the design and installation process.

Longevity comes from:

  • Selecting dimensionally stable species
  • Using thermally modified products where appropriate
  • Prefinishing before installation
  • Allowing for expansion and drainage
  • Choosing finishes that penetrate, not encapsulate

When these principles are followed, exterior wood can last decades with minimal intervention.

Too many projects are designed around replacement cycles instead of life cycles. That mindset is expensive, wasteful, and unnecessary.

Exterior wood should be treated as a long-term investment, not a disposable feature.
